Day Nine--Skagway

We got our Captain’s “wakey wakey” announcement at 8:00 a.m. to tell us about Skagway. This is how we get our wake up calls each morning from the Captain. He also says quite often “easy, peasy”. He is a character and has been very visibly seen and heard over the intercom through out this cruise. Skagway is a small town that was established as the last jumping off point for the great Yukon Gold Rush. Not far from Canada the pan handlers would stock up and head out from Skagway, which is still rustic and a national park in of its self. Like each morning we have been greeted by some form of wildlife. Today was a couple of Sea Lions between the ship and shore line.

So once again we woke and trekked up to the Windjammer for breakfast. Everyone is eating a little less at breakfast and lunch (food still good and plentiful, but we are getting sick of eating). Then we headed down to first drop off Drake for his rock climbing adventure. After that the rest of us were picked up for the Adventure Park and Zip-line trip.

After a short drive out of town (200 hundred locals) we made a turn off on to some gravel to start the adventure. From there a short hike up the mountain to the staging area. We were given our instructions and suited up with gear. Then another hike up a bit to start the warm up activities where you cross a blank, rope and log bridge high above the ground finishing with a baby zip-line to get you ready for the much higher and longer zip lines.

Then another little climb and 5 progressively longer and steeper zips down to the ground level. This took about 2 hours to complete. While we were getting ready we could see Drake rock climb a 70 foot wall next to us. He looked to be having fun and afterward we learned he did some real rock climbing and repelling, which reportedly was very scary.

After pictures with our guides we headed back to town where Janie, Logan and Sara got off to head to the Red Onion Saloon that was suggested as a great place for pizza and an even better site for the guys. Please see the picture with Logan being served and that will explain. Jeff headed to the ship to grab Drake. Sara treated us all to pizza which was great and local brewed Alaskan beer and we then we went to Sweet Mama’s for some amazing cupcakes that our guides told us about. Thanks Sara for the cupcakes!! We then did a little shopping and a quick stop at Sara Palin’s store before heading back to the ship prior to the 4:30 departure and we were one of the last 100 to get back on the ship. The picture shown in this blog is of the most photographed building in Alaska and the second is Sara Palin’s private residence.

When you look at the water you see a milky green. This is all the sediment coming down from the glaciers. Later as we were headed out we came across a river of glacier sediment dumping into the ocean that looked like we would be hitting a sand bar.

Another rainy day, but you would not really have known it by all we did today. After boarding and cleaning up we went to another show and then off to our second formal dinner. Tonight was Lobster and Prime Rib night. Both Logan and Drake had two orders of lobster and Janie had both the lobster and prime rib. All good right through desert, so Drake took off to get with his friends and the rest of us went up to play spades and listen the 50-60’s Rock and Roll event. Then a few hands of Spades and “Bull Shit” then Dad called it quits. The other three listened to the piano comedian in the lounge and proceeded to have a midnight sandwich. What they didn’t know was they were missing the midnight chocolate buffet…..that slipped by the whole gang except Drake who said there were ice sculptures and tons of chocolate and fruit deserts. I don’t know if Janie, Sara and Logan will forgive Drake for telling us about this as it was not on the list of activities or food options for the day.
